Think back to your childhood. What did you love reading?

I loved Goosebumps, by R. L. Stine. He had a way with words like no one else, and his stories jumped right off the page and into your bedroom.

I so vividly remember reading Goosebumps: Night of the Puppet People. I looked up from the book, and I swear I saw one of my little brother's Beanie Babies move. Another time I was reading Goosebumps: Deep Trouble, a story about a killer hammerhead shark. In an instant my blue carpet became the deep, dark abyss of the ocean, and here I was in my bed, which may as well have been a small raft. I was too scared to even put my arm over the side, fearing I would become shark bait.

We daydream. We communicate with stories. We think of each of our lives as "my story." In short, we're wired for stories.

Sometimes we're the hopeless romantic, kissing in the rain like Noah and Allie in The Notebook.

Other times we're Rooster Cogburn and Mattie Ross, out for revenge in True Grit.

Then there comes times when we’re the scared, helpless child Cole Sear in The Sixth Sense.

We put ourselves into these stories, and they become real. That's why, in life and in real estate, whoever tells the best story wins.

Impactful stories need authenticity. They’re relatable, and they connect. Even the best liars can’t tell influential stories because their stories aren’t authentic.

The Intro (or The Hook)

You have very little time to reel in your audience. Be concise, but precise with word choice. Choose words that tug at the heartstrings of your audience.

Character Development

Every great story has great characters. Take an incredible plot with lacking character development: you’ve got a great outline, but a hollow story. You’re not capturing anyone’s imagination with that.

Realtors, think of the home’s amenities as the characters in your story. What "characters" does this listing need to sell? Develop them. Flesh out your outline. Bring your story to life.

The Climax

Every great story has that one moment that sinks its hooks into you and reels you in. It might make you jump, cry, laugh or hurt, but it always makes you remember.

As a realtor, you have to convince the buyer that this house has something they can’t live without. They have to leave that showing believing someone else is going to take it from them if they don’t act now. Create that moment, that sense of urgency, and the deal's done.

The Ending

End your story with a flawless finish. Maybe they saw it coming, but it was awesome anyway.

Maybe it came out of left field and left them floored. Either way, they didn’t leave disappointed.
